Dockter

Be more productive without the distraction of non-running application icons in the dock.

Why do we need to see the icons of apps that are not in use?

Dockter gets out of the way by even removing itself from the dock after it has done its thing.

Minesweeper

Download

I’ve always enjoyed the minesweeper game that comes on PC’s. Here is a version for the Mac…but better looking of course. There are a few options like the look of the board game, the soundtrack and it gives a way to save the games. But mostly it is just the game that we know and love.

Mozy

You should be backing up your Mac. You know you should. And now with Mozy, you have no excuse not to backup.

Mozy is a free client that will let you backup with ease to the Mozy online service. It’s been around for PCs for a while and just recently offered the service for Macs. Just sign up and install the client, pick which files to back up, and off you go. It’s all automatic from there on out.

I can hear you already. “If this is a paid service, why is this freeware on FMW?”

The great thing about Mozy is they offer 2GB of storage with free accounts. That should be enough to get your most important documents and photos at least. For me, I scanned my important documents, put it in an encrypted disk image, and then uploaded it for safe keeping. And if you need more space, the price is only $5/mo for unlimited storage. Though not free, that is hard to beat.

Now there is no excuse not to backup your data.

Pyro

February 1, 2010 – 9:24 am

Download

The folks over at 37signals make awesome web apps like Basecamp and Tadalist. Their latest is an AJAX-based chat application called Campfire. I’ve tried it and was impressed. It allows you to hold a chat room with as many people as you want, and it saves all your transcripts for later reference.

Pyro is a web browser built specifically for Campfire, with the added benefit that when you receive new messages on Campfire, Pyro’s icon will bounce in the dock and display the number of unread messages. This is sort of a hybrid between a desktop app and a web app.

ArtRage

Download

I have no artisitic ability. I’ve accepted that. That is why I like Artrage. It’s a simulation of canvas painting, but it also has another neat feature for people like me.

From the Developer’s site:

ArtRage is all about playing with paint without the mess, and having fun in the process. You can paint your own image from a blank canvas to completed work, or load in a picture to trace and have the tools pick their colours for you as you paint over it.

Keyword there is “trace”. Perfect.

Update: It looks like the full version has gone the way of the almighty dollar, but there us still a free edition without all the new bells and whistles. Though you do get the increased speed.

GrandPerspective

January 27, 2010 – 8:18 am

Download

This is a great Mac app on principle alone — it’s both functional and really cool! Upon opening GrandPerspective, you’ll be asked to select a folder or drive. Then GrandPerspective checks all the files in that folder and graphically displays a representation of all the files, as a bunch of boxes. Each box is proportional in size to the size of the file, and they’re color coded by file type. You can easily see what files are taking up the most space in your hard drive.
