JewelToy (aka Bejeweled) is a nice game to get addicted to. I’ve played this game many times online, but I was glad to find a nice freeware version to play offline on a Mac.

Once installed, AppleJack is accessible from the Single-User Mode command prompt. (Hold down Apple-S while booting.) AppleJack can repair your startup volume, repair permissions, cleanup cache files, and validate preference files. It has a simple text menu so you don’t have to remember commands.

This could be a life saver in case of trouble.

I’d love to try this one out, but my Mac ain’t a laptop. MacSaber takes advantage of the motion sensor in newer Mac laptops (it’s not yet compatible with older ones). It senses the speed and acceleration of motion as you swing your laptop around, producing varying lightsaber sounds (of both movement and striking). The site also mentions keyboard backlight effects, and invites you to try it out in a dark room, so apparently the app not only sounds cool, but looks sweet, too.

f you take a few different photos of a landscape and you want to stitch them together to make a panorama, hugin is the way to do it. Just line up the photos and save them as one. It’s pretty straight-forward and has good results.

The new panorama features in Photoshop CS3 work really well. I used it recently on some photos I took of the Golden Gate Bridge. But, Photoshop is expensive and not everyone can afford a copy. hugin can be a nice replacement.

Droopy is a free and open source mini Web server whose sole purpose is to let others upload files to your computer. Droopy is free software distributed under the Python Software Foundation License.
